Confessions of a Clearance-Obsessed Impulse Buyer

CONFESSIONS OF A CREATIVE | Episode #3

I have a confession to make: I am a clearance-obsessed impulse buyer. Before I even step fully into a store, I’m already scanning for that magical red-tag section. It’s instinct at this point—the first place I go, every time. Do I always need what I find? Absolutely not. More often than I’d like to admit, those “great finds” end up tucked away on a shelf, waiting for their moment. But in that instant, it feels like possibility…like I’ve stumbled onto something meant just for me.

There’s a very specific kind of adrenaline that comes with thrifting—it’s the creative equivalent of a buzzer-beater shot. The thrill of the hunt, the unpredictability, the split-second decision-making…it’s a rush. You sift, you search, you dig—and then suddenly, there it is. The piece. The one no one else noticed. It feels like winning a game no one else knew they were playing. And walking away with it? That’s the victory lap.

But it’s not about being cheap. It’s about seeing value where others might not. In a world overflowing with options, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant newness—rows and rows of things with no story yet attached. Thrifting quiets that noise for me. It’s about reinvention. Second chances. Breathing new life into something forgotten. Every piece has a past, and I get to be part of its next chapter. There’s something deeply creative in that process—transforming, reimagining, storytelling through objects. And beyond that, it’s a small but meaningful way to live more sustainably, to consume more thoughtfully, and to reduce waste.

So maybe my clearance habit isn’t just a habit—it’s a perspective. A way of seeing beauty in the overlooked, potential in the passed-by, and inspiration in the unexpected. Because at the end of the day, creativity isn’t just about what we make—it’s about how we see.

“Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.”
