PASSION PROJECTS | Episode #2
For years, October became my own personal Olympics — except instead of athletes, it was DIY glue guns, thrifted props, and couples costumes that always went for the gold.
It all started with my best friend — the queen of Halloween — who has hosted a costume party every single year for as long as I can remember (give or take a maternity leave or two). Her love for the spooky season was contagious, and before long, I found myself obsessed with the chance to make something unforgettable.
And I mean make — not buy.
Because what’s the fun in simply clicking “add to cart?”
My costumes were sourced from the holy ground of creative reinvention: thrift stores.
I’d roam the aisles, collecting random bits and pieces that would eventually transform into something magical… after many late nights, trial and error, and moments of “Why did I think this was a good idea again?”
Every year became a creative challenge with one clear goal:
✨ Win Best Costume. Again. ✨
And not only did I design and build our costumes — my husband always joined me as the other half of our brilliantly ridiculous duos — but I also designed the party invitations. If Halloween was a sport, I was the head of design and the star player.
And I’ll be honest…
We won. Every. Single. Time.
🏆 The streak was legendary.
🏆 Expectations were high.
🏆 The pressure became very real.
It turns out that when you become the team that always wins — people start rooting for the underdog. And eventually, the weight of maintaining our undefeated title (and hearing the playful groans when we took home the trophy again) became a little less fun, a little more… intense.
So the streak came to a close.
Graciously. Proudly. And slightly relieved.
But wow — what a run.
What a creative joyride.
What a way to make memories covered in glitter and hot glue burns.
This year, I’m simply celebrating the spirit of Halloween: the costumes, the creativity, the laughter, and the community it brings together.
Just thought I would share one of my favorite passion project eras.
Have a safe and happy Halloween! And if you’re crafting something epic… I’m cheering you on from the sidelines 👻✨
